Hi, I have a remote cabin in NW MT that is off the grid. I have a small solar system on it and I was wondering if it is possible to have alternative energy, Solar, Wind, Hydro etc without the use of batteries? Is there a way to harness and use solar and be truly self sustaining without relying on battery power?

Hi, this is Sang Hyun Ahn
I’m U of I student who is working on economics project for PV industry.
If you have time to help me, could you recommend some sources that I can find information about Gov. Policy about importing parts for PV Module product? For example, the US government allows importing module parts (glass, EVA sheet, back sheet) from oversea and assembles on US territory? So it could ear Made In USA tag?
Thanks!!!!!

My wife and I are considering purchasing some property in Alaska which does not have power. We are considering Solar Power but are concerned about how the system will recharge with very little sun light during the winter months. Is this a problem ? How much sun light is needed to run a fully functional home including all amenities such as washer/dryer, furnace pumps and well etc. Thanks in advance for whatever info you can supply. Ken Kovitch

A couple years ago, I saw a demonstration that took place in Oregon about, I think, an off-grid system. A man, apparently a solar power engineer, converts the energy from solar panels, and rather than store it in batteries, he stores it in hydrogen tanks for year-round 24/7/365 power availability. Is there a website about this and what is the status of this technology?

Hey, Justin,

I don't know of any leasing companies in NY, but the good news is that you may not need leasing. NY state just passed the PACE program. See this post:

http://www.solarpowerrocks.com/solar-trends/pace-yourself-for-solar-new-yorkers/

Once these bonds are passed, people will easily be able to self finance through these special tax assessments on their property. Now sure how solar leasing companies will be able to compete against these programs, but we'll see.
