The DOE’s Solar Decathlon is a competition where the Department of Energy gets 20 selected universities to come up with commercially available solutions for off-grid solar powered homes. “Solar Decathlon houses must power all the home energy needs of a typical family using only the power of the sun.” The competition will be held Oct 12 – 20 at the same place it was in 2005, the National Mall in Washington, DC.

The homes are awarded on how sharp they look and how efficient they are. It supports Bush’s Solar America Initiative (SAI) which is supposed to make Solar cost competitive with regular ‘ole energy by 2015 (I like the spirit, I don’t like the odds…. unless you live in Oregon)
